Intelligence Studies for K-12 Outreach Education |
|
The ISREC K-12 Outreach program mission is to provide parent and community awareness of internet computer ethics, privacy, safety issues related to the use of the computer technology, to increase the security of K-12 information systems, privacy and cyber safety awareness, and to integrate information security topics into the K-12 curriculum. The experiences received and lessons learned in conducting and administering the K-12 program past a few years, identified that complex problem such as information security and privacy require multidimensional solutions, public education, cultural changes to protect students and faculty with age appropriate solutions. In addition to security analysis, we believe there must be correlation between behavior modification techniques and wide range of potential security remedies. Security incidents that erupt in secondary and high schools often have their etiology in K through 6. The Internet related problems facing student, parents and community will continue to evolve in the future. Therefore, Early intervention results in prevention. Behavioral techniques such as teacher training and peer intervention must be integrated, when appropriate, with more traditional security methodology as well as coordination with local law enforcement. The ISREC K-12 awareness goal is:
1. To develop a collection of resources to educate students and parents about information security, ethics and privacy; 2. To promote students' understanding of the importance of cyber crime, cyber ethics, identity theft, and effect in their daily lives; 3. To expose students to a broad range of participatory activities in the safety and privacy of the systems; 4. To increase students' awareness of the academic preparation necessary for major studies and careers in the information assurance and security; 5. To conducting K-12 teacher workshops on information security issues and best-practices in information protection since 1998. Because there is significant overlap between workshops on best practices in computing and workshops on best practices in teaching students fundamental concepts .
In summary, the main focus of ISREC K-12 program is to fulfill its mission through collaboration with K-12 public schools, collaborators, the communities and parents on the Clark Atlanta University campus and ultimately the nationwide with the funded support Central Intelligence Agency (http://www.cia.gov/csi/outreach.html ). |
